Derksen takes charge in Korea

Robert-Jan Derksen was one of the few players able to tame changing conditions at the Pinx Golf Club on Jeju Island to move into an early three shot lead on the second day of the Ballantine's Championship.

Volvo China Open - Round Two

As the weather turned from light breezes and clear skies yesterday to rain and strong winds this morning, a number of players struggled to cope including overnight leader Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who shot three consecutive bogeys during a two over round of 74 to drop to five under.

The Spaniard bogeyed three consecutive holes from the fifth and recorded another at the 17th to cancel out two birdies for the day and see him fall out of a lead he shared with New Zealand's Mark Brown following the first round.

Derksen, meanwhile followed up a six under 66 yesterday by shooting four under through 12 holes to establish a three shot advantage.

He sank five birdies against just one bogey to move clear of Brown – who was yet to take to the course - and other early morning competitors Thongchai Jaidee, who shot a 71, Alessandro Tadini and Kang Wook-Soon, who were all on seven under.

Another player to suffer due to the conditions was American Fred Couples, who shot a three under 69 yesterday but was enduring a torrid second round.

Couples, who started at the tenth, was one over at the turn after bogeys on the 11th and 13th were softened slightly by a birdie on the 14th.

He fought back to level par for the day with a birdie at the first but then a disastrous run of three bogeys and a double bogey in his next six holes served to undo all the 49 year old's good work.
