Samuel Del Val insists he will be keeping the focus purely on his own game as he looks to produce one of the greatest underdog victories in European Tour history at the Mutuactivos Open de España.
The home favourite arrived at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid this week placed at 1,413th on the Official World Golf Ranking and should he lift the trophy on Sunday, he will be the lowest ranked player ever to win on the European Tour.
He enters the day in a share of second but has a mountain to climb if he is to catch Jon Rahm, a man with a five shot lead who is ranked 1,408 places above him in the world standings.
But after maintaining a packed schedule in both Europe and China over the last six months as he seeks to earn some playing privileges, the 32-year-old will be trying to take it all in his stride.
"It’s Jon Rahm," he said. "He shot 63 today.
"I have to keep doing what I’m doing, I can’t focus on what anyone else is doing.
"Only a win would really change anything for me but top five in the world against, what am I, 1,413 or something? I’m focusing on what I’m doing, have a good round and finish as high as I can."
A winner on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica in 2016, Del Val is experiencing the biggest week of his career in his homeland and will go out in an all Spanish final group for the second day in a row on Sunday.
"An amazing experience - I don’t remember experiencing anything like it before," he said.
"It’s been good scoring. I haven’t hit as many quality shots as I wanted too, I was trying to hang in there for dear life."
