Defending champion Noren eyeing strong finish to season

Alex Noren has his sights set on a strong finish to the season as he prepares to launch the defence of his British Masters supported by Sky Sports title.

Britain has been a happy hunting ground for the 35 year old, who has won four of his nine European Tour titles on UK soil - including last season's British Masters at The Grove.

That win in Hertfordshire was the third of the Swede's four victories in a stellar 2016 season and the World Number 14, who is excited to be playing in front of British crowds once again at Close House Golf Club this week, says it was a significant one.

Noren, who returns to action this week following a two-week break, said: "It's wonderful to win anywhere but this tournament last year was huge for me.

"It was a very big win, and you know, it's always nice playing in Britain. I've always loved it, either if it's in Scotland or England or Ireland, it's beautiful.

"The crowd is nice and the fields are great. It's great to be on that trophy.

"(The game) feels good. I had two weeks off. I practised quite hard for those two weeks and tried to get this end of the season to end well."

Noren will get his first round under way at 12:40pm on Thursday alongside tournament host Lee Westwood and reigning Masters Tournament champion Sergio Garcia.

And while he currently knows very little about this week's host venue, Noren is looking forward to learning more about the course.

He added: "It's nice to be back at this competition. But at a new course and I'm going to play it later this afternoon and obviously the Pro-Am tomorrow.

"Having a look, I saw a few holes coming in and it looks like the fairways are quite wide.

"And the greens look pretty tricky, a lot of run-offs. I've heard so much. I know it's hilly but I'm going to have a good look at it."

Another man relishing the prospect of playing in front of the local crowds this week is Garcia.

The Spaniard said: "It's always exciting to come back to the British Isles and the UK and play in front of these crowds.

"I've always said they're my favourite people to play in front of, not only for the support but how much they know about the game and how respectful they are.

"It's just great fun to play in front of them. We are excited about it and hopefully we can get a lot more of this good weather that we had today and hopefully for the rest of the week."
