Day two digest: BMW International Open

Martin Kaymer continued to delight, Gaganjeet Bhullar had plenty to celebrate and the fans got close to the action on day two of the BMW International Open.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Golfclub München Eichenried.

Kaymer the king of Munich

Record crowds followed Martin Kaymer around the course on day one and he had another bumper following on Friday in Bavaria. Searching for a first European victory since claiming his second Major title at the U.S. Open Championship five years ago, the 34-year-old made eight birdies and two bogeys in a 66 that moved him to 11 under and a two shot lead. "It’s going to be exciting for sure," he said. "It’s never easy leading a golf tournament but fortunately I’ve done it a few times in my career. It’s a very nice position to be in. Now I just play against myself, try to reach my number and hopefully it’s enough to be in the lead on Saturday evening."

What a shot M8

Gaganjeet Bhullar had never had a hole-in-one on the European Tour before Friday but he certainly picked the right time and place to make one. His ace from 196 yards with a six iron on the 17th handed the Indian the keys to a BMW M8 Coupé worth €194,000 before the car has even made its premiere. His perfect shot was the 16th of the season and just the second in BMW International Open history on the 17th at Golfclub München Eichenried.

Happy hunting ground for Westwood

Lee Westwood is making his first appearance at the BMW International Open for 13 years but Golfclub München Eichenried is the scene of one of the most important of his 24 European Tour wins. Westwood had claimed five of those wins as he won the Order of Merit in 2000 but failed to finish in Europe's top 50 in the following two seasons and slipped out of the top 200 on the Official World Golf Ranking. The triumph on his debut in Munich in 2003 ended a drought of almost three years and started the renaissance that would eventually guide him to World Number One. He has started with rounds of 68-69 and is right in the mix after two days.

Push the button

Speaking of Lee, he produced one of the best pull outs of a swing you'll ever see on the sixth hole on Friday. He was over the ball and just about to start swinging when a phone rang in the crowd. He managed to abort midway through his backswing and went on to make a par on the par five. Now come on guys, you know the drill.

Smashing shot

Bavaria is famous for its beer but it was wine causing an issue for Jordan Smith in round two. He sent his second shot on the last a long way left and, after hitting the roof of a hospitality tent, his ball went into the stand and smashed a fan's glass. Glass was the only thing damaged, thankfully. Well, that and Jordan's wallet when he replaced the plonk. Fore left!
