Day two digest: 2022 Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willett

Everything you need to know from the second round at The Belfry.

Willett

Host Danny wowed the crowds and raised a lot of money for charity, while Hurly hit the front on day two of the 2022 Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willett.

Here is everything you need to know from the second round at The Belfry.

Host Willett puts on a show

Tournament host Danny Willett may have been questioning whether he would make the cut after covering his first nine holes in 39 shots on Thursday but any such fears have been well and truly banished since. The Englishman picked up two late birdies on day one to reduce the damage and sign for an opening 73, and he carried that form into Friday, carding eight birdies in a superb 65 - the lowest round of the week so far - with his only blemish a closing bogey on the ninth.

...and raises plenty of money for charity

With title partner Betfred pledging to donate £1,000 to Prostate Cancer UK for every birdie - and £2,000 for every eagle - made by Willett this week, he took the total to £12,000 by adding eight birdies to the four he made on Thursday. Well done Danny.

Long's birdie run

After opening his second round with nine straight pars to remain at five under par, European Challenge Tour graduate Hurly Long burst into life as he reached the turn. He reeled off four consecutive birdies at the first, second, third and fourth holes to grab the outright lead on nine under. And though his birdie run ended at the fifth, he secured an important par there from six feet to keep the momentum going. Another birdie followed on the sixth before his only bogey arrived at the ninth. But his second-round 68 was still good enough to give him the outright lead on nine under par heading into the weekend.

MacIntyre produces contender for shot of the week

I think it's fair to say this approach into the 13th from Robert MacIntyre was one of the best shots we've seen so far at The Belfry this week, and I'm not sure we'll see many better ones.

Kinhult lands eagle

Marcus Kinhult was motoring along at a steady pace on Friday afternoon until this brilliant eagle at the long 15th kick-started his round. He would follow it up with birdies at 16 and 17 to get within a shot of the lead.
