Day two digest: 2021 Canary Islands Championship

Adri made himself at home, Richie was on a roll, the aces kept on coming and we remembered a very special man in the second round of the 2021 Canary Islands Championship.

Arnaus impresses again

When we played this course last week for the Tenerife Open, Adri Arnaus went 66-66 over the weekend and he maintained that momentum by starting 64-64 this week. A run of six birdies in seven holes on Friday catapulted him to 14 under and a one shot lead from in-form South African Garrick Higgo. "I've been playing pretty smart," he said. "After six days of playing this golf course, you know which spots are better than others. Even though I played really solid, when you don't have it all you just have to be smart and place it in the right spots, give yourself some chances. That's what we did today. Became a bit cold in the middle of the round but stayed patient and these last few holes paid off. Happy to make some birdies coming in."

Kawamura continues ace race

If it feels like we do this every week, it's because we do. When Masahiro Kawamura saw his eight iron off the tee at the seventh from 158 yards take one big hop, a few little ones and hit the bottom of the cup, he extended an incredible run. He made it eight European Tour events in a row with an ace, with 13 in total in that spell taking the season's tally to 17. In just 13 events.

Remembering Seve

It was ten years ago on May 7 that the European Tour lost its first superstar and most passionate supporter. The great Seve Ballesteros did so much for the game of golf in Spain, Europe and across the world. On the course he won 50 European Tour events including five Major Championships and helped reignite the Ryder Cup after years of American dominance. Off the course he guided Europe to a Ryder Cup victory as captain and became a much loved ambassador for the game around the world. His portrait sat on the first tee on Friday so all today's players could remember and pay respect to a man to whom they owe so much. Gone but never forgotten.

Great Scots on the charge

The climate may be very different to their homeland but the Scottish contingent in the field are enjoying an excellent week on Tenerife. Connor Syme finished with an eagle in a 64 to get to 12 under and join countrymen Calum Hill and Richie Ramsay - who both signed for rounds of 65 - two shots off the lead. Syme and Hill are both still seeking a first European Tour win but Ramsay has three to his name and is confident a fourth is not far away. "It’s just a case of staying patient and keep working hard," he said. "I’ve always been a hard worker, and sometimes you get frustrated, but you have to stay patient out here because you have chances every week and you’re going to lose more than you win so just try to enjoy the moment. My whole thing is just trying to stay in contention on Sunday because I love that. That’s where you get the buzz and the adrenaline, and that’s where you feel like ‘this is my chance to open the door and get number four’."
