Day two digest: 2021 Acciona Open de España presented by Madrid

Everything you need to know from day two in Madrid.

Club de Campo Villa de Madrid

Wil stayed bogey free, Jon was everywhere, apparently, Rafa had his groove back and Graeme made the cut in style on day two of the 2021 Acciona Open de España presented by Madrid.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Besseling hits the front

Wil Besseling had his first top 100 finish in the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex last season, 12 years after he first gained his card. He could be celebrating a lot more than that come Sunday after a second round 65 handed him a one shot lead at 13 under heading into the weekend in Spain. "The last couple of seasons have been really good," he said. "I did struggle before that, so it is good to be out here performing well and making putts, and being on top of the leaderboard after 36 holes, hopefully it will stay that way come Sunday." He is one shot ahead of World Number One Jon Rahm and will go out in the final group on Saturday in front of a sell out crowd alongside Rahm and another Spaniard in Adri Arnaus.

New and old at home for Rahm

Rahm is playing in Spain for the first time in two years this week and he admits some things have changed - mainly that he sees his face everywhere. "I realise if I'm walking around Madrid how often I get recognised now," he said. "And then I see my mug everywhere! I see my face on buildings, on buses, in bus stops, in train stations, it's unusual, I'm not used to seeing any of that." But one thing that hasn't changed? Grandma's cooking.

Rafa finding the positives

Rafa Cabrera Bello admitted at the start of the week it had been a "hard two years" since he finished second at this event in 2019. He has slipped to 231st in the Official World Golf Ranking in that time but on Friday he matched his lowest round of the season with a 65 to get to ten under. And he put some of that down to shift in attitude. "I'm trying not to pay too much attention to my mistakes," he said. "I think that's what I haven't been doing great over the last couple of years. After every round I've been focusing too much on what I did wrong as opposed to just getting more energy from the positives. I'm not dwelling, I go and do my practice routine like always and as long as it feels good on practice, I'm not going to dwell on what happens on the course, just focus on the positives and let it take care of itself."

There's something brewing.........

In 2017 Graeme Storm defeated Rory McIlroy in a play-off to win the South African Open but the popular Englishman was struggling with a wrist injury and eventually went under the knife in April 2018 after playing in this very event. He would not play again until January 2020, undergoing yet more surgery. After making just two cuts in 12 events, he was forced to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship and he underwent surgery again, returning at the 2021 Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willett. Playing on a medical exemption, he had made just one cut in 13 events coming into this week but, sitting right on the mark, he did this.

It's safe to say everybody is hoping Stormy has an excellent weekend - he's certainly earned it.

Up and down to keep the damage to one shot? Not for Victor Perez. What a shot.
