Day two digest: 2020 South African Open

Everything you need to know from the second round at Gary Player Country Club.

Bezuidenhout

Jamie Donaldson posted the lowest round of the tournament so far, while Christiaan Bezuidenhout rose to the top once again on day two of the 2020 South African Open.

Here is everything you need to know from the second round at Gary Player Country Club.

Bezuidenhout flying high again

South African Bezuidenhout is a man in exceptional form at the moment. He claimed his second European Tour title with a four shot victory at last week's Alfred Dunhill Championship and has not taken his foot off the gas over the first two days at Sun City. After finishing the first round in a six way tie at the top, the World Number 41 shot a spotless 67 on Friday to head into the weekend in a share of the lead alongside Donaldson on ten under par. The home favourite was pleased with his performance on day two. "It was solid", he said. "I think to sum up today it was controlled and solid."

Donaldson agonisingly close to tying course record

Ryder Cup star Donaldson stormed into a share of the lead courtesy of a stunning 63 that contained ten birdies and a solitary bogey. It could have been even better, though, as the Welshman's chip at the 18th came this close to diving into the hole for a course record equalling 62.

Stone's superb eagle at the sixth

Three time European Tour winner Brandon Stone got off to quite a start on Friday, making back to back birdies on the second and third before spinning his approach into the par four sixth into the cup for a marvellous eagle. He would go on to sign for a bogey free 68 to move to three under for the tournament. Check this out...

Chips galore at the third

The players proved that just because you miss the green at the par three third, it doesn't mean the best you can hope for is a par. Dylan Frittelli and JC Ritchie were unable to find the dancefloor with their tee shots but still came away with birdies...

Big home challenge in Sun City

There were plenty of South African flags at the top end of the leaderboard at the end of the second round. Two shots behind Bezuidenhout were Dean Burmester and Frittelli in a tie for third, while Ruan Korb and Jacques Kruyswijk were among the large group in joint fifth on five under.
