Day two digest: 2020 ISPS HANDA UK Championship

Everything you need to know from day two at The Belfry.

Benjamin Hebert

Walters showed his mettle, Waring rolled the dice and Burmy kept us all entertained on day two of the 2020 ISPS HANDA UK Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from the second round of the final event of the UK Swing.

Walters shows his fighting spirit.......again

In 2013, just weeks after losing his mother, Justin Walters finished second at the Portugal Masters to keep his playing privileges. Last season he did it again, having lost his father on August 28 - one year ago on Friday. With his dad on his mind, the South African ground out a gutsy 71 to keep his position at the top of the leaderboard by one shot. There'd be few more popular winners on Sunday than Justin Walters. "It's quite special, today a year ago I lost my dad and I've just got quite a sombre, relaxed approach at the moment," he said. "Whatever comes my way, comes my way. When something good happens, smile and enjoy it. That's got me through some tough moments already this week in terms of the situations I've found myself in. I plan to continue that on the weekend. It would be nice not to have to lose someone in my family for me to produce good golf. I'm working on that hard and I'm starting to gain some ground in all areas of my game. This has been a good test and this is what we play for."

Waring spins the wheel

Paul Waring is making is first appearance since March this week after struggling with a back issue as the European Tour made its return following the coronavirus hiatus. The Englishman admits he did not have any idea where his game would be at, telling a mid-round interview it could "a 58 or an 88" - on day two he fired a 67 and his freewheeling approach looks to be paying off. "I’ve found it’s best not to think," he said. "I try not to overthink anything. It’s a massive thing for me, overthinking, if I can find away to free it up, which is ideal here. I’ve only come to see where my golf game is. I had no idea what shape it would be in. I feel like I’m freewheeling it at the moment." Keep those brakes off, Paul.

The Bullet loves the UK Swing

They say there's no place like home and Marcus Armitage has certainly been enjoying his time on home soil during the UK Swing. The Englishman has claimed two top 20s in England and a top 30 just over the border in Wales, with another good week under way at The Belfry. A second round 68 has left him well in the mix at six under heading into the weekend, a weekend that no doubt would have seen bumper crowds had it been possible to allow fans in. And Armitage would love to see a UK Swing with fans become a regular fixture on the Race to Dubai. "It's been great," he said. "I think they should have a UK Swing going forward for years to come. I know I'm a bit biased, but I think it's fantastic. I think when the crowds come back a UK Swing will be unbelievable."

Sensational Suri

There are bunker shots and then there are bunker shots. A long way back in wet, compacted sand on the treacherous 18th, Julian Suri must have been pretty worried as he stood over his second shot. He needn't have been - just look at this.

Burmester puts on a show

Hearing Suri celebrate his shot there was pretty entertaining but we think Dean Burmester has got him beat. The South African was mic'd up for his round and the results were, well, you have a listen.
