Day three digest: WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

Everything you need to know from day three in Texas.

Sergio Garcia

Sergio produced the biggest of finishes, Finno did his Superman trick and two debutants set up an intriguing clash on day three of the 2021 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Austin Country Club.

Sergio wins in style

Sergio Garcia had been firmly in control of Group Eight but a 3&2 defeat to Matt Wallace coupled with Lee Westwood's 4&3 victory over Tyrrell Hatton meant the Ryder Cup veterans would go to extra holes to see who would make it to the knockout stages. Westwood had piled on the pressure as Garcia was forced to make smart up-and-downs on the second and third but his tee shot on the fourth took one bounce and spun back into the hole to prompt stunned celebrations on the tee. Ever seen a walk-off hole-in-one before?

Westy hasn't.

Third time lucky

Sergio wasn't quite as spectacular on the 13th as he put two balls in the water. Third effort was pretty good, though.

The last 16 is set

This thing is wide open with only Jon Rahm having advanced from the top seeds. Last man in and 64th seed Dylan Frittelli is still alive as is Erik van Rooyen (62) and Ian Poulter (60). In the bottom half of the draw, Tommy Fleetwood is the highest seeded player at 21. Fancy picking a winner? No, neither do we.

Debutants set for ding-dong

Among the underdogs to make it out of the group stages are Robert MacIntyre and Victor Perez. MacIntyre made two eagles in five holes to win on Wednesday and then shared a spectacular half with World Number One Dustin Johnson on day two. On Friday, as Johnson lost to Kevin Na to leave the door open, MacIntyre drove the 18th green to three feet to set up an eagle and a half with Adam Long. As for Perez, he backed up his day one triumph over Marc Leishman with a win against Group 16 top seed Sungjae Im. This one should be a cracker.

Tommy's miracle par

Fleetwood was four up at one point against Bryson DeChambeau but when he stood on the 18th tee his lead was down to one. The Englishman sent his tee shot into a penalty area but he managed to play his ball over the back of the green and then get up and down for a par and seal his place in the knockout stages. The mark of a champion?

Super Finno

Earlier in the match, Tommy had to get his caddie Ian Finnis to move a sign for him. Now the man known as Finno is a big guy, but we suspect he doesn't know his own strength.
