Day three digest: Porsche European Open

Robert MacIntyre salvaged a birdie at the last to keep hold of his lead heading into the final round but was joined by home favourite Bernd Ritthammer at the top of the leaderboard after an absorbing third day at the Porsche European Open.

MacIntyre saw Friday's four shot advantage disappear to zero as the Scot and Germany's Bernd Ritthammer share the lead at nine under par at Green Eagle Golf Courses, with World Number 17 Paul Casey one shot behind.

MacIntyre arrives in style

Event sponsors Porsche have offered the overnight leader of the tournament a chance to drive home one of their top model cars as a reward. Paul Casey had the honour on Thursday but Robert McIntyre’s superb 65 on Friday meant it was the Scot’s turn. A little tentatively - the 23-year-old drove to Green Eagle Golf Courses in a state of the art car on Saturday morning and he looked pretty chuffed with the prize.

Hammer time for Bernd

The Nuremberg native was in the final group alongside overnight leader Robert MacIntyre but showed nerves of steel as he surged into contention/ the lead on his 100th European Tour event. The 32-year-old’s only mistake came on the opening tee shot when he found a fairway bunker, but he made amends immediately with a stunning approach to close range for an unlikely birdie.

Pin seeking Pablo

Spanish players are renown for their touch around the green and Pablo Larrazábal continued that trend in Hamburg. The four time European Tour winner plays with his heart on his sleeve but the 36-year-old was more than happy to produce this delightful chip in from the deep rough on the penultimate hole.

Casey closes in

The Englishman spoke about the length of the Green Eagle Golf Courses and the importance of the long irons. And he proved his theory at the 14th when he landed his tee shot within five feet of the 220 yard par three. Pinpoint.

Chesters inches from brand new car

There is also a prize for a hole-in-one on the final par three on the course - the 17th. Larrazábal provided a fine chip into the hole, but sadly that was with his second shot. However, Ashley Chesters nearly showed everyone how to claim Porsche’s all-electric Taycan car, but his tee shot rolled up just inches short.
