Day three digest: 2022 Masters Tournament

Everything you need to know from day three of the first Major Championship of the season.

The 12th at Augusta National Golf Club

Scottie led the way, Tommy went low, Charl made a stunning eagle and it was oh so cold on day three of the 2022 Masters Tournament.

Here is everything you need to know from Saturday at Augusta National Golf Club.

Scheffler ready for the challenge

Scottie Scheffler will take a three-shot lead into the final round as he looks to continue an incredible 2022 so far by claiming his first Major Championship. The American carded a 71 on day three to get to nine under and lead the way from Australian Cameron Smith, with South Korea's Sungjae Im at four under. He began the year ranked 12th on the Official World Golf Ranking but without a victory on the DP World or US PGA Tours. He now has three and is World Number One. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of playing tomorrow," he said. "I'm just going to keep doing my thing, keep my head down and try and execute shots."

Not your typical Spring day in Georgia

When you think of Augusta, you think of glorious sunshine beating down on a sea of green and victories under long shadows. Well, the property was green as ever on Saturday but there was no sun, no shadows and it was not chilly, it was cold. "Four hand warmers," said Rory McIlroy when asked the secret to keeping warm. "I'm getting soft. I've been living in Florida for too long now, so this is cold for me." Min Woo Lee added: "Weather hasn't been this cold and then all off sudden it turns into a Scottish type of weather." Here's hoping it warms up.

Fleetwood embracing the conditions

Tommy Fleetwood may have fired two rounds of 66 in his career at the Masters but the Englishman felt he had to play "amazing" golf to card a 70 on Saturday. As conditions have got more and more difficult throughout the week, Fleetwood has got better and better, going 75-72-70 to sit one over after 54 holes. The man raised on the west coast of northern England knows a thing or two about playing the cold and wind and he admitted he would have no problem if conditions stayed that way. “I played amazing today," he said. "I mean, not saying I’m the best golfer in the world, but I played really, really well in the conditions and it’s so hard to get anywhere near the pins. If I am going to have any kind of a sniff or have a good finish, I need the conditions to be like this and then play well."

Big bird for Schwartzel

Niemann, Woodland, Cink - we've seen some incredible wedges holed from distance this week and Charl Schwartzel joined the club on Moving Day from 136 yards. He even got a big high five from playing partner Scheffler.

Zalatoris brings the finesse

No beefy wedges for Will Zalatoris, just a beautiful touch from 84 feet.
