Day three digest: 2021 Hero Open

Everything you need to know from the third round at Fairmont St Andrews.

Fairmont St Andrews

Forrest's brilliant birdie burst, Hill's hot irons and EDGA Hero Open begins on Saturday in Scotland.

Everything you need to know from round three at Fairmont St Andrews.

Go Forrest, Go!

Grant Forrest started the day seven shots behind overnight leader Lucas Bjerregaard on eight under and his challenge at the summit looked more unlikely after an opening bogey. A birdie at the third kickstarted his round but it was at the turn where he surged into contention. The Scot rolled in six birdies in a row from the sixth and missed at the 12th from eight feet for another. He made it seven in eight holes at the next before adding further gains at the 15th, 16th and last for a brilliant 62 - matching the course record at Fairmont St Andrews and taking a share of the lead.

Tarrio's trending

Santiago Tarrio may not be a familiar name on the European Tour but he's definitely made an impact this week in Scotland. The Spaniard has been in a rich vein of form on the European Challenge Tour with two victories and three top five finishes. He recorded a tie for 15th at last week's ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by Modest! Golf Management and is in third place here. "I’ll try to play the same golf," he said. "I know my golf is improving if I’m spending a lot of weeks at the top of the leaderboard – either on the Challenge Tour or the European Tour." Superb stuff, Santiago.

Maybe it is in the putting grip? Tarrio's putting style may not be conventional, but it's certainly working.

What were you doing at 15?

That is the question. What were you doing at 15 years of age? Well Frank Kennedy was making his European Tour debut at Fairmont St Andrews and he held his nerve to make the weekend field. The Englishman was among one of the late starters on Friday and, due to the three hour and 20 minute delay, was forced to finish the final two holes of his second round on Saturday morning. He was on the cut line when he returned but a bogey at the 17th hole looked to have ended his first European Tour start. However, the amateur rolled in a birdie on his 36th hole to make the weekend.

No Hill too steep to climb for Calum

Calum Hill joined fellow Scot Forrest at the top of the leaderboard at 18 under par and that is down to his irons. The 26-year-old was not happy with his approach to the par five third, but he landed it within seven feet and he duly rolled in the eagle putt. At the 15th, he almost holed out for another eagle from just off the green and was unlucky not to find the cup.

EDGA Hero Open promotes new stars

Eight golfers are taking part in the EDGA Hero Open in Scotland and at next week’s EDGA Cazoo Classic at London Golf Club as the field vies for a place in the EDGA Dubai Finale. These next two events are the third and fourth 36 hole tournaments running alongside European Tour tournaments, with competitors taking on the same course set-up as European Tour professionals. The top four players from the two tournaments qualify for the returning EDGA Dubai Finale, held alongside the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai - the final Rolex Series event of the year - at Jumeirah Golf Estates on Friday and Saturday (November 19-20). Kipp Popert topped the leaderboard after the opening round at five over par.
