Day three digest: 2021 DP World Tour Championship, Dubai

Rory was back on top, Lawlor lifted the trophy, there were plenty of long putts and more than a little bit of luck on day three of the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

McIlroy back on top

He held the lead after 18 holes and lost it after 36 with a double bogey on the last but Rory McIlroy will take on a one shot lead into the final round on Sunday. The Northern Irishman has won this event before and after a third round 67 was feeling confident that he could make it a historic hat-trick. "I'm right where I want to be," he said. "I want to be contending on Sundays in golf tournaments and feel like I'm back to playing the way I should and the way that will get me back contending. I'm excited. I'm excited to go out there and try to pick up another one."

Mr consistent on track for history

After starting his round 68-68, Collin Morikawa carded a bogey free 69 on Saturday to stay in pole position to become the first American ever to win the Race to Dubai. He made three birdies in his first six holes and while he was not too pleased to par the next 12, it will take a big change of circumstances for him not to lift the Harry Vardon Trophy. "It was all over the place," he said. "Front nine played pretty good but overall just didn't take advantage of the par fives and even though I felt like I hit it worse yesterday, I still birdied all the par fives. So all three days have kind of been a little bit of this, a little bit of that and I've got one more day to kind of put everything together and hopefully put a low one out there."

Lawlor takes EDGA Dubai Finale glory

Brendan Lawlor rounded off a fine individual year by winning the EDGA Dubai Finale by four shots. The Irishman carded a round of 73 on the Earth Course for a winning total of one under par, holding off the challenge of Canadian Kurtis Barkley for his third victory in the five event series. Lawlor also won the first two tournaments of 2021, the EDGA Cazoo Open and the ISPS HANDA World Disability Invitational, with American Chris Biggins winning the EDGA Cazoo Classic and England's Kipp Popert claiming the EDGA Hero Open. “Hopefully the European Tour have more events next year, which I think they will, and we can keep this ball rolling as it’s just fantastic,” said Lawlor. “I came off the green there and Rory McIlroy gave me congratulations so that is pretty outrageous."
