Day one digest: Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willett

Everything you need to know from day one at The Belfry.

Schwab maintained momentum, Willett showed he can multitask, Sully and Dodo took on the tenth and Eddie was just showing off on day one of the 2021 Betfred British Masters.

Here is everything you need to know from Wednesday (yes, Wednesday) at The Belfry.

Schwab makes fast start

In 2019, Matthias Schwab had ten European Tour top tens and he has had four in just nine events on the 2021 Race to Dubai, with three in his last four starts. He is unquestionably one of the most consistent performers on Tour but that first victory is still proving elusive. After an opening 66, he leads by one in the English Midlands, but he is not feeling any pressure to finally get over the line. "I don’t know exactly what I need to do to make these good weeks great weeks because if I knew I would have done that already but it’s been a solid start to the season with some really nice finishes," he said. "I couldn’t quite finish way up the leaderboard but the top tens are nice and I’m just trying to do the same going forward and hopefully it’ll just happen. I don’t think I need to change a whole lot because the game is feeling really solid."

Doubling up no problem for Danny

Danny Willett admitted on Tuesday that he could see why only two previous hosts of this event had managed to secure top tens on the course. The role comes with many commitments but it's nothing a Major Champion and two time Rolex Series winner can't handle. Willett carded five birdies - raising £5,000 for Prostate Cancer UK courtesy of Betfred - and two bogeys to sit just two off the lead. "It was good, really good ball control and I gave myself a lot of chances," he said. "A nice enough position with three rounds left."

No fear for Sully

It takes quite a hole to be the signature hole at a venue as storied as The Belfry but the tenth certainly lives up to its billing. There are plenty of driveable par fours about but not many of them are over water. Not that Andy Sullivan was daunted by the challenge. What a shot.

Not to be outdone.........

Another Ryder Cup star was taking it on. And Edoardo Molinari got the Hollywood treatment.
