Day one digest: Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Everything you need to know from day one of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Dunhill

Holes-in-one, a stunning return to form and a sprinkle of stardust were all on display on an entertaining first day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from day one in Scotland.

Walters waltzes ahead

Justin Walters kept his playing privileges by the skin of his teeth last season and after no top 20s in his first 23 events in 2019, it looked like a big finish would be needed to keep him on Tour next season. So he could not have picked a better time or place to produce his lowest round for six years as he carded a wonderful 63 over the Old Course at St Andrews to open up a one shot lead. It was also an emotional day for the South African, who recently lost his father.

Westwood lights up Carnoustie

In 547 events on the European Tour, Lee Westwood had only made two holes-in-one coming into this week and the second of them was this season. Well now he has three and one of them is at Carnoustie. The Englishman made the 26th ace of the season on the eighth at the Open Championship venue with a six iron from 189 yards, prompting big celebrations and a kiss from partner and caddie Helen.

MacIntyre makes a big bird

It's not often that a hole-in-one doesn't bring the biggest cheer of the day but here in Scotland they love their golf and they love their local stars. Robert MacIntyre wasn't having the best of days when he arrived at the seventh at Carnoustie but he holed his second from the fairway to produce one for the highlight reel and a shot he'll never forget.

Always the performer

Bill Murray's most famous golfing performance will always be in Caddyshack but this is his sixth Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and he always manages to put on a show. On Thursday he was carrying out backwards interviews, entertaining fans and doing this. Never change, Bill.

A justified invite

He can sing, he can dance, he can act and he can do this. We're not jealous Justin Timberlake, honest.
