Day one digest: 2021 Omega European Masters

Everything you need to know from day one at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

Crans

James Morrison reached new heights, while Francesco Molinari produced some magic in the mountains on day one of the 2021 Omega European Masters.

Here is everything you need to know from Thursday at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

Morrison shoots sensational 60

James Morrison did not shy away from the quest for a 59 on Thursday, instead going straight for the flag - and what would have been an audacious eagle - with his approach at his final hole. But he had to settle for a birdie there and a course record 60 that leaves him three shots in front heading into day two. After carding six birdies in a back nine of 29, he said: "I had a really good look on the last and thought, just try to make this. The minute your focus goes like that, you chip it stiff, make birdie and shoot ten under par. I was trying to hole that shot on the last, but next time maybe."

Ormsby's exceptional eagle

Wade Ormsby made an eagle two that was as beautiful as his surroundings after driving the green at the par four seventh. Having sent his tee shot to around 16 feet at one of the most stunning holes in golf, he calmly rolled in the eagle putt.

Sullivan surprises himself

Andy Sullivan and Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club have not always seen eye to eye but the Englishman seemed to have found the recipe for success in the mountains on Thursday. He made eight birdies and two bogeys to reach six under par and sit joint fourth at the end of day one. He said: "This course should suit me, the way I play my game, tee to green. I just get sucked into things and I'm maybe a bit too aggressive and put myself behind the eight ball and have to work my way back into the tournament. I tried not to do that today, tried to be conservative with the lines and keep giving ourselves chances."

And this tweet would suggest he didn't expect to be quite so high on the leaderboard after 18 holes...

Magic from Molinari

Major Champion Francesco Molinari had a mixed day on Thursday but his approach to the 15th green will live long in the memory. After his tee shot landed in a bunker, he muscled his ball onto the green - and at one stage it looked like it might just roll in for an albatross. But he made do with a tap-in eagle instead.

Soderberg defence

The 2019 champion Sebastian Soderberg is back in Switzerland to defend his title, and he was given something special to remind him of his win...

And he made a solid start to the 2021 edition, firing four birdies and no bogeys in a 66.
