Day one digest: 2020 Scottish Championship presented by AXA

Adrian Otaegui set the pace with a stunning 62, while some innovative play did the job for Paul Waring on day one of the 2020 Scottish Championship presented by AXA.

Otaegui goes very low

Otaegui began his first round with a hat-trick of birdies, and they just kept on coming as he picked up another shot on the seventh before going birdie-birdie-birdie again at the start of the back nine. After holing a brilliant long putt at the tricky 17th for his ninth gain of the day, the Spaniard closed his round with another to sign for a bogey free 62. When he entered the clubhouse, he was four strokes clear of the chasing pack but he was hunted down in the afternoon, with Matt Wallace and Bryce Easton cutting the gap to three.

Wallace picks up where he left off

Four time European Tour winner Wallace is trending in the right direction, having improved on his previous result in each of his last two events. He carried on his fine form from the final round of last week's BMW PGA Championship on Thursday, opening his round with three straight birdies before adding an eagle and two more birdies in his sparkling 65.

Captain fantastic

Also going low on Thursday was European Ryder Cup Captain Padraig Harrington, who carded seven birdies and a single bogey to join the group in a tie for fourth. After his round, he said: "I was very pleased with my irons today, struck them lovely. A lot of good signs, but three more days to do it. Thursday is a bit early to be peaking. I couldn't be happier with how I'm playing at this stage. It's just a mental thing when you haven't been on the golf course. I liked what I saw the first three weeks, that's why I'm here for the fourth week."

Rare birds

There was some seriously low scoring on day one but not very many eagles. In fact, we only saw four across the entire round, with Wallace, Easton, Mathieu Fenasse and local favourite David Law the only men to get one.

Waring's wizardry

Have you even taken on a chip shot with a driver? Me neither. But maybe we'll all be giving it a go after seeing Paul Waring do it at the 11th. He saved par here and went on to sign for a four under par 68.

Cameraman takes a tumble

Home hope Marc Warren got more than he bargained for during a mid-round interview as the cameraman fell over. It gave the Scot a good laugh and didn't do him any harm as he went on to shoot an opening 67.
