Day one digest: 2020 ISPS Handa Vic Open

Everything you need to know from day one of the 2020 ISPS Handa Vic Open.

13th Beach Golf Club

Alejandro accelerated, Fantastic Mrs Fox came to the rescue and there were plenty of laughs on day one at 13th Beach Golf Club.

Here is everything you need to know from the first round Down Under.

Cañizares eager to kick on

It would be fair to say that, on the golf course, things have not gone according to plan for Alejandro Cañizares over the last few seasons. A two time European Tour winner and the son of a Ryder Cup great, he has found himself at the Qualifying School the past two autumns as he looks to once again be a regular in the upper echelons of the Race to Dubai. An opening 63 in Australia and a two shot lead will have done those ambitions no harm but the Spaniard is looking for longevity at the top of the game. "I'm just surprised I've played so crap the last three years more so than today," he said. "It's been complicated, I got injured three years ago and it took a while. I became a dad a year ago, life changes. I'm getting back to it, I'm starting to work hard on it and I'm still motivated. I've been on Tour for 13 or 14 years and I still want to do it. I've still got half of my career ahead of me."

When interviews go awry

Cliché's, colour coordination and Henrik Stenson. You get the feeling Jake McLeod and Min Woo Lee had some fun out there today.

No caddie, no practice, no problem

Ryan Fox focused his practice this week on the Beach Course so his first look at the Creek this year came with his opening shot on Thursday. Couple that with the fact that wife Anneke was drafted in as a late replacement when his usual caddie fell ill and you could have forgiven the Kiwi for having a slow start. He carded a 67 to get to five under and right in the mix. "I've played here ever since the inception of this event so I've played both courses a lot," he said. "I actually didn't even bother looking at the Creek Course this week until today so I guess not seeing it this week and going out and shooting five under, I'm pretty happy."

Amateurs continue to impress

After Jayden Trey Schaper secured a top ten in South Africa, another amateur is thriving on home soil on the European Tour. With a recent victory at the Australian Amateur Championship under his belt, Jed Morgan carded a 66 on Thursday to get to six under. He'll not be taking any money home this week which could be a blow considering his countrymen keep taking his cash off him.

Those Golfing Gods

Hole-in-one at a par four?! Nope. Incredible shot from Li Haotong and this is his reward.

Class is permanent

Dame Laura Davies is a World Golf Hall of Fame member and one of the greats of the modern game. Now 56 years of age, she has not played competitively since the summer but turned up in Victoria and fired a 67 to put herself right in the mix. "I didn't know what was going to happen," she said. "I haven't played a tournament since the Scottish Open in August, so it was nice for me to get out and get a really good round in. I had six months off and now I turn up here not knowing what I'm doing. I've been on tour 35 years and I didn't have a clue what to do."

Speaking of class.........

There are many reasons why Inbee Park has seven Major Championships and the ability to produce shots like this is one of them. Wow.
