Dawson grouped with European Tour greats

The 2015 Senior Open champion Marco Dawson will begin his defence of the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex in the company of European legends Miguel Angel Jiménez and Bernhard Langer for the first two rounds at Carnoustie

Dawson, who beat Langer, winner of the 2010 and 2014 editions of the tournament, by one shot to last year’s title, won the championship at Sunningdale in just his second appearance.

Jiménez and Langer have 63 European Tour victories between them, adding to 14 Ryder Cup appearances for Europe.

Spaniard Jiménez has made just two appearances in the Senior Open, building on his eighth-placed finish in 2014 by finishing fourth last year, behind Dawson, Langer and Colin Montgomerie.

Home favourite Montgomerie, a three-time Senior Major winner, needs a Senior Open title to complete the Senior career Grand Slam on the European Senior Tour.

Montgomerie completed a Senior Major double in 2014, winning both the US Senior PGA Championship Presented by KitchenAid and the U.S. Senior Open, and then successfully defending his US Senior PGA title last year at French Lick Resort, Indiana.

The Scotsman will be joined by multiple Major winners John Daly and Tom Watson. Daly is making his Senior Open debut after turning 50 earlier this year and Tom Watson, a three-time winner of the senior Claret Jug, will be playing in his 15th edition of the tournament.

Watson’s wins came in 2003, 2005 and 2007, adding to his eight Major Championships. Daly shocked the golfing world when he won the 1991 PGA Championship, as a ninth alternate, and then the 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews, beating Costantino Rocca in a four-hole play-off.

Making his return to Carnoustie for his Senior Open debut is Frenchman Jean Van de Velde, who finished runner up in the 1999 Open Championship after a dramatic final hole.

Van de Velde needed a double-bogey on the 18th to win, but carded a triple-bogey seven after striking his third shot into the Barry Burn before losing in a play-off to Paul Lawrie.

The 50 year old will join 1996 US Open champion Tom Lehman and the 1991 Masters Tournament champion Ian Woosnam for the opening two rounds.
