David Law became the third European Tour member to break a course record during the pause in the season due to Covid-19 pandemic with a seven under par round of 60.
Following in the footsteps of both Sam Horsfield and James Morrison, Law carded a memorable round to best the previous record set on the Pines Course at his home club of Hazlehead Pines, Aberdeen.
Law’s round occurred during a club medal on July 4, which the match secretary allowed him to play in.
“I am a member at Hazlehead and I spoke to the match secretary Phil Lawrence to ask if I would be able to play in the medals as it would be a good opportunity to get a card back in my hand,” Law told the Evening Express.
“That was the first medal I had played and it was nice to try to post a score before I go away to start competing.”
The 29 year old’s round was two strokes better than the former course record set by Kevin Duthie, and included eight birdies, a bogey, a double bogey, and a slam-dunk hole in one at the par-three 16th.
“The hole-in-one was with a gap wedge, it was playing about 110 yards and it just went straight in.
“I birdied 18 so I didn’t have a putt for a 59 but I think it is the lowest round I’ve shot.”
Law, who won his maiden European Tour title at the ISPS Handa Vic Open in Australia last year, said his game is in good shape ahead of his return to competition at next week’s Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood.
“I have been playing a lot of golf since the lockdown restrictions were eased, mostly at Hazlehead and the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre.
“It has been good to get back scoring and playing golf. I feel my game is in good shape as I have been working hard during this lockdown period. I feel happy to go compete and test myself.
“I haven’t played since the Qatar Masters at the start of March so I am looking forward to getting going again.”
In June, James Morrison recorded a 12 under par 58 at his home club of St George’s Hill, while Sam Horsfield carded a 14 under par 59 at Streamsong Resort’s Black Course in Florida in May. At the weekend, Horsfield captured another course record, this time a 14 under 58 at Champions Gate Country Club.
