David Cannon takes us through Dubai’s golfing journey.
One of the most celebrated golf photographers in the world, David Cannon has witnessed first-hand the dramatic transformation of Dubai having covered every edition of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic since the European Tour first visited the United Arab Emirates in 1989.
Over the last five decades, David has covered 120 men’s Major Championships, 70 Women’s Major Championships, 19 Ryder Cups, 15 Solheim Cups and 19 Walker Cups. This he thinks, in addition to his coverage of regular European Tour events, has culminated in over 15,000 nights in hotels across the world.
But it is his long-standing love affair with golf in Dubai, and particularly Emirates Golf Club, that stands alone as one of the proudest relationships in his storied career.
Here are some of David’s most iconic Dubai moments over the years:
Tiger 2008
Tiger Woods is a two-time winner of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. The American superstar’s first win came in 2006, when he beat three-time Champion Ernie Els in a play-off. Woods’ second title came two years later, when six back nine birdies, highlighted by a 20 foot downhill putt on the 18th, sealed a dramatic victory. A vintage Tiger Woods fist pump followed…
Rory 2009
The moment a star was born. Rory McIlroy captured the first of his 14 European Tour titles at the Majlis course back in 2009. Then a fresh faced 19-year-old, Rory faltered down the stretch after building up a commanding lead before a miraculous up-and-down from the bunker behind the 18th green sealed his par and a maiden professional win.
Eighth tee revolution
In Cannon’s eyes, the best place in the world to capture professional golfers. The transformation of Dubai can’t is reflected in the skyscraper-drenched backdrop seen from the eighth tee on the Majlis Course at the Emirates Golf Club.
Past Champions Anniversary
Having covered every Omega Dubai Desert Classic, 2014 was a special year for Cannon as every former champion (other than the late, great Seve Ballesteros) was present for the special anniversary edition of the tournament. Seve was represented by his son, Javier.
