Dave Renwick, a caddie to three Major winners, has died at the age of 62 at his home in East Calder, near Edinburgh, after losing his battle with cancer.
Renwick, known affectionately as “Buddy”, was on the bag for José María Olazábal’s victory at the Masters Tournament in 1994, Steve Elkington’s win in the 1995 US PGA Championship, and all three of Vijay Singh’s Major triumphs: the 1998 and 2004 US PGA Championships, and the 2000 Masters.
As a mark of respect, players, caddies, media and officials wore black ribbons during the second round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
Tributes poured in for Renwick, a life-long fan of Glasgow Rangers FC who served an apprenticeship as an electrician and worked as an oilrig worker in the North Sea before deciding to become a caddie on The European Tour in 1983.
Paul Lawrie wrote: “Very sad to hear of Davy Renwick passing, a great guy and a great caddie. RIP my friend.”
Marc Warren also took to Twitter to express his condolences, saying: “We play with a heavy heart today, but his memory will live on. A true legend of Scottish golf, gone but not forgotten.”
Renwick is survived by his wife, Ruth, and their children.
