Fans’ favourite John Daly, one of the most colourful and charismatic players in the world game, is the latest Major Champion to sign up for next month’s Barclays Singapore Open.
Korean Y E Yang, the first Asian to win a Major, and 2011 Open Champion Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland have also confirmed their participation in the US$6 million tournament, held at Sentosa Golf Club from November 8-11.
World Number One Rory McIlroy, also of Northern Ireland, three-time winner Adam Scott of Australia and American lefthander Phil Mickelson will headline Asia’s richest National Open.
Daly’s ‘grip it and rip it’ style pulls in the crowds whenever he tees up on The European and US PGA Tours.
Although Daly is largely reliant on sponsor’s invitations these days, the 46 year old American has proved himself competitive with a fifth place finish in the Reno-Tahoe Open to his name this season.
The two-time Major Champion is renowned for his prodigious length from the tee, and is ranked ninth in driving distance on the US PGA Tour with an average of 306.6 yards.
Yang wrote his name in the history books when he won the US PGA Championship in 2009, achieving the improbable by reeling in Tiger Woods, who had started the final round with a two shot lead.
Until Yang’s march to glory, Woods boasted a 100 per cent record when leading a Major after 54 holes, winning all 14.
Clarke, one of the most popular players on The European Tour, underscored his love for links golf with a three-shot victory in the 2011 Open Championship at Royal St. Georges Golf Club.
“It’s fantastic that three true characters of the game, John Daly, Y E Yang and Darren Clarke, will play the Barclays Singapore Open this year,” said Chris Jordan, Senior Vice President, Golf, of tournament promoters World Sport Group.
“All three are Major Champions, and I’m sure they will want to add the Barclays Singapore Open to their resumés.”
This year marks 49th staging of the Barclays Singapore Open.
