Sergio Garcia looked in imperious form as he surged to the summit of the Deutsche Bank Championship leaderboard at TPC Boston.
The Spaniard followed up an opening round of 65 with a 64 on Saturday, carding seven birdies before his only blemish of the day, a double bogey on the par-four 14th.
However, that was forgotten at the final hole – where Garcia sank an eagle to set a clubhouse target that would not be beaten by any of the late starters.
The Spaniard’s exceptional efforts meant he finished 13 under par, a shot ahead of Roberto Castro and Henrik Stenson.
Stenson moved into contention on the back of the day’s joint-best round, an outstanding 63.
The Swede, who currently tops the Race to Dubai standings on The European Tour, did not drop a shot as five birdies came on the front nine and three coming in.
His sterling performance was matched only by US Open Champion Justin Rose.
The Englishman was also faultless in accumulating eight gains having begun the day on the back of a 70 yesterday.
His final position, of nine under par, left Rose tied ninth and right in contention ahead of the weekend.
