Starting the day seven behind Hanson, Colsaerts turned in a four under par 32, birdied the tenth, then almost holed his approach to the 11th for a sixth gain of the day.

At 13 under he was level with Hanson, who had two birdies and three bogeys in an outward 37.

Surprisingly his playing partner and World Number One Rory McIlroy was unable to take full advantage, turning in level par as the wind at Lake Malaren made scoring conditions much tougher than the first two days.

Not that Graeme McDowell was concerned – the Northern Irishman reaching seven under for the day with three holes remaining to join South African George Coetzee in fourth place on 11 under.

Hanson regained the outright lead at the 13th when he reached the green in two and two-putted for birdie, while Coetzee had a hattrick of gains from the 14th join Colsaerts in second.

Colsaerts found trouble off the tee at the 16th, overshot the green with his third shot and double bogeyed to fall back to 12 under and fourth place, and Hanson was two clear of Coetzee when he holed from ten feet at the 15th.
