Colourful Day at the Irish Open

The frills and the fascinators were left at home and instead,  golfing fans turned out in their droves today in the most colourful and interesting of sports attire for the first ever Irish Open Wacky Trousers’ Day.

The Wacky Trousers competition at the Irish Open

Whilst there was plenty of excitement on course for day two of Ireland’s greatest golfing event, there was a veritable sartorial rainbow off course as visitors to Fota Island Resort ramped up the style dial for an opportunity to win a top prize from Emirates, official airline to the Irish Open.

The winners were selected by Country Manager for Emirates, Margaret Shannon, Catriona Buckley of the Irish Examiner and Antonia Beggs, Championship Director of the Irish Open. Each judge obviously had two-time Major winner, John Daly in mind when they crowned the overall golfing fashionista. Daly is famed as much for his eccentric trousers as his golfing prowess and whilst unable to attend this year’s Tournament,  his influence on the fashion stakes was clearly in evidence at Fota Island Resort.

The winners were:-
1st – The O’Brien Family (Dublin), Who was presented with a €500 voucher for Emirates and a selection of Emirates golf attire; Champagne courtesy of the Irish Examiner
Maria, Grace (3), Lucy (4) and Michael
2nd – James Conway from Cobh
3rd - The Stan Gang from Galway
