Fredal Fernandez, Cassey Stapleford and Imogen James and Deputy Head teacher Ian Hames from Wren Spinney Community Special School were presented with the keys to a brand new £40,000 Variety Club Sunshine coach, which will be used to transport children to a number of activities.

The school provides secondary education for 60 young people with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties, and it the latest school to benefit from the annual scheme at Woburn Golf Club.

Former England Cricket Captain Mike Gatting made the presentation on behalf of Travis Perkins plc, which funded the donation through the Variety Club Golf Society. Senior Tour players Andrew Murray, Cesar Monasterio, Des Smyth, Steen Tinning, Pedro Linhart, Gary Wolstenholme were also on hand to give their support to the scheme.

Mr Hames: “We are thoroughly delighted with this generous gift as we depend upon our own transport to give our young people the opportunity to mix in the wider community to ensure they do not become socially isolated and enhance their education.

“Our new minibus will be used five days per week taking our students out and about in their community. They will be able to access shops, the swimming pool, riding, other educational premises, including our own retail unit, The Shop, in Kettering town centre.  It will also be used for extra-curricular activities, residential visits and for holiday playschemes so it is a vital resources for us.”
