More than €16,000 was raised at last week’s Portugal Masters for the tournament’s two Official Charities, Refugio Aboim Ascensão and APPACDM (the Portuguese Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Handicapped People).
Almost €7,000 was raised through the sale of official programmes, with spectators making a donation of €3 per programme over the course of the week. These donations were matched by the charitable arm of The European Tour, The Tour Players Foundation, taking the total raised through programme sales to just short of €14,000.
Funds were also raised via the pre-tournament Pro-Am, with the Portuguese Golf Federation making a contribution through the sale of a team, and also via the ‘Charity Mastershot’ Putting Challenge, pushing the total amount raised through the €16,000 mark. All proceeds went to the two charities, which benefitted equally.
Refugio Aboim Ascensão is a charity organisation which aims to better the lives of abused, abandoned and neglected children under the age of six; whilst APPACDM promotes the inclusion of people with a disability or incapacity in society in order to improve their quality of life.
David Park, The European Tour’s Charity Executive, said: “We are delighted with the amount raised, and would like to thank the spectators for getting behind charity in the Algarve and throughout Portugal, as did The Tour Players Foundation Trustees by agreeing to fund match those donations.
“Both charities have also expressed their gratitude to the public, the tournament organisers and all parties involved for the opportunity not only to receive vital funds, but also to raise awareness through their association with one of Portugal’s premier sporting events. We look forward to next year’s tournament, and hope to improve on the total raised for other worthy causes in Portugal.”
