Roger Chapman heads into the weekend of The Senior Open presented Rolex with a chance to become only the third player to win the great triumvirate of senior major titles.
Chapman has already won the Senior PGA Championship and U.S Senior Open and lies within striking distance of the halfway lead at Royal Lytham & St Annes in his bid to add the Senior Open title to his resume and join 2017 champion Bernhard Langer and three-time winner Gary Player in an exclusive club of champions to have all three titles under their belt.
A second round 68 took Champion, who won his two other senior majors in 2012, to two under par and three behind early clubhouse leader Scott Dunlap.
“To have the grand slam of the big ones would be unbelievable,” he said. “Still in shock over the first two, and that was seven years ago!
“I've just turned 60 this year. To win the Senior Open as a 60-year-old would be very special.
And the Englishman has form over the famous links at Royal Lytham & St Annes having won here before, albeit 38 years ago when he captured the 1981 Lytham Trophy as an amateur.
“The challenge is Royal Lytham & St. Annes and those bunkers. If you stay out of those bunkers I think you have half a chance at making a decent score,” he commented.
“I'm comfortable on this course,” he added. “I won the Lytham Trophy as an amateur in 1981, 38 years ago.
“It's a golf course I enjoy playing but to win The Senior Open would be icing on the cake.”
