Chan holds narrow lead ahead of final round

Chan Shih-chang will take a narrow lead into the final round of the King’s Cup presented by PTT Group but has Eddie Pepperell and Jaco Ahlers breathing down his neck at Phoenix Gold Golf Club.

Both Chan and Pepperell produced matching rounds of 63 - the joint-lowest score of the tournament so far - to surge up the leaderboard on a breezy day in Pattaya.

Chan moved to nine under par after firing seven birdies on Saturday, while Pepperell is a shot further back after carding an eagle, six birdies and a solitary bogey in his third round.

South African Ahlers shares second place with Pepperell after mixing five birdies with two bogeys, while Lionel Weber and Mark Foster are one stroke behind them on seven under.

Chan, who entered the day five shots behind overnight leaders Terry Pilkadaris and Sattaya Supupramai, covered the front nine in 31 to close the gap significantly.

Another birdie at the 11th saw the 30 year old move into a share of the lead before further gains at the 13th and 15th took him into the clubhouse on nine under.

Chan was thrilled with his blemish-free round. He said: "I’m very happy to return with a bogey-free round considering how windy it was today.

"Actually, I’m used to such windy conditions coming from Taiwan and I’m familiar with such playing conditions - Chan Shih-chang

"This is the best round I’ve played all season and I’m really pleased. I changed my putting stance and it really worked to my advantage the last three days."

Englishman Pepperell made the perfect start to his round, reeling off a hat-trick of birdies from the first.

He dropped his only shot of the day at the fifth but bounced back immediately, notching an eagle at the long sixth before another birdie at the eighth saw him cover the front nine in 30.

Pepperell then picked up a shot at the long 11th for the third time this week before making another gain at the 17th to get to eight under.

"Saturday’s a moving day and I managed to do that, so that was nice," said Pepperell.

"I had a bad back nine yesterday which gave me lots of things to do today.

"I came out to play pretty nicely which was good.

"I got off to a hot start and hit the ball really well and gave myself tap-ins which made life really easy for myself - Eddie Pepperell

"It was a bit tougher on the back nine as it was quite windy and there are some tough holes. But I still felt I played well for most parts of the round there.

"So I’ll try to do the same again. I'm looking forward to the last 18 holes tomorrow."

Ahlers, who produced rounds of 67 and 68 on Thursday and Friday respectively, carded a bogey at the second on Saturday before bouncing back with birdies at the third, fourth, sixth and eighth.

Another birdie at the 11th was followed by a disappointing bogey at the 16th as he finished with a 67.

Jaco Ahlers

After his round, Ahlers said: "I didn’t finish as good as I wanted to unfortunately.

"I missed a short one on 15 and a bogey on 16 just rubbed it in.

"But I’m happy as I set a target of eight under when I started and I met it."

Friday's co-leaders slipped down the leaderboard on day three, with Australian Pilkadaris finishing his round in a share of sixth on six under and Supupramai two further back at four under.
