With overnight leaders Alejandro Cañizares and Michael Hendry amongst the afternoon starters, Casey birdied both par fives on the back nine to join the pair on seven under par.

Having admitted it had been a while since his last bogey-free round after a faultless opening 67, the 35 year old extended that run to 24 holes after starting on the tenth.

The former World Number Three is down at 132nd after a year plagued by injury problems and loss of form.

However, the green shoots of recovery began to appear last week when he picked up his first ranking points since April with a third-place finish in Korea.

Playing partners Bo Van Pelt and David Howell were also going well as both reached five under par for a share of fifth place.

American Van Pelt was three under for his round through seven holes after opening with a 70, while England’s former Ryder Cup star Howell birdied four of his first six holes.

They were alongside Australian Peter Wilson, who after turning in 34 had an eagle two at the first, and England’s Andrew Johnston, who was yet to tee off.
