Campillo makes his move

Spain’s Jorge Campillo produced a stunning third round performance to climb into contention at the Africa Open.

One under par at the halfway stage and 13 adrift of runaway leader Adilson Da Silva, last year’s Avantha Masters runner-up shot eight birdies and an eagle at East London Golf Club, with a solitary bogey leading to a nine under par 63.

At ten under Campillo was up into a tie for third, although the leaders were still to tee off.

The 26 year old started with four straight birdies, added another at the seventh to turn in 32, then picked up a shot at the short tenth.

Three straight pars and a bogey at the 14th ended any chance of a first European Tour 59, but an eagle at the long 15th and birdies at the 16th and 18th saw Campillo make swathes through the field.

Brazil’s Da Silva, whose opening 62 remains the best score of the week, starts the weekend on 14 under and with a three shot lead over South African Jaco Van Zyl.

Of those players on the course it was Argentine Emiliano Grillo going best – he had six birdies in his first seven holes and by turning in 31 was up to nine under for the week.

Fast starts were the order of the day, as highlighted by Tjaart Van Der Walt starting eagle-par-birdie-birdie-birdie.

That put the South African 11 under, but after letting the field close in with two opening pars, Da Silva and Van Zyl got going at the third.

Van Zyl made a two-putt birdie, but was four behind his playing partner, who hit a marvellous second to eight feet and converted for eagle.
