Campillo edges ahead

Jorge Campillo increased the prospects of a home winner on the 100th anniversary of the Reale Seguros Open de España as The Challenge Tour graduate moved into the lead at Real Club de Golf de Sevilla.

The 25 year old, already a  runner-up at the Avantha Masters during his rookie campaign, recovered from an opening bogey at the tenth with birdies at the 12th, 13th and 16th to turn two under par for the day.

That left the Spaniard six under for the week, after an opening bogey-free 68 in the event which marked the start of The European Tour in 1972.

Campillo led by one from overnight leader Shaun Micheel and England’s Graeme Storm.

The 2003 US PGA Championship winner Micheel had an eventful morning - following a double bogey at the 11th with a hattrick of birdies, bogeying the 15th and 18th then birdieing the first.

Former Open de France winner Storm was three under for the day after birdies at the tenth, 11th and 14th.

Campillo had his second bogey of the week at the second, but chipped in at the fourth to go back in front.

Micheel’s second double bogey of the day left Storm in solo second, with England’s Robert Rock hitting an approach to five feet at the fourth to join compatriot Danny Willett and Italian teenager Matteo Manassero in third.
