Jamaican Delroy Cambridge has become the 15th player to pass the €1million career earnings mark on the European Senior Tour after his tied 16th place in the Casa Serena Open took him past the target he set himself back in his rookie campaign in 2001.
Cambridge’s cheque of €5,369 in the Czech Republic was enough to take him past the milestone amount in his 11th season on the Senior Tour.
During that time Cambridge has won five Senior Tour titles, the last of which came in 2009 when he defeated Australian Mike Clayton in a play-off to capture the Jersey Seniors Classic for a second time.
After joining the Senior Tour in 2001 and winning his maiden title in the Dan Technology Senior Tournament of Champions, his best campaign came in 2002 when he won three times, including his first Jersey title and the Seniors Match Play Championship.
Cambridge is the latest member of the illustrious Senior Tour millionaires’ club, which is led by Carl Mason with €2,249,442.
“Making €1million is what I was looking at all along and I wanted to do it before I retire so it’s nice to final achieve it,” said the 61 year old.
“It’s great to join the millionaire’s club – there’s not many who have done it on the Senior Tour so it’s something I’m proud of it. I’ve always had getting to €1million in the back of my mind, I just wish I still had all of it!
“Winning in Jersey two years ago was probably the highlight of my Senior Tour career because it kept me going. I was dropping back a little bit in the categories and that win gave me a little bit more time to play, so that was big for me.
“I had a little setback after winning in Jersey but I think I’m on a run again and I feel a lot better. Hopefully I can continue to play well.”
