Francois Calmels will be back on French soil this week at Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge looking to follow in the footsteps of three time winner Brooks Koepka and graduate to The European Tour.
The Frenchman has won twice in 2013, back in April at the Challenge de Madrid, and some two months later at the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open, which at the time saw him ascend to the top spot on the Ranking.
He currently resides some three places lower heading into this week at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil, in fourth place, meaning Calmels is ideally positioned to gain his European Tour card whether he wins for a third time in the events remaining this season, or not.
The Frenchman is therefore focusing on playing more consistent golf in 2013, and if he were to replicate the achievement of Koepka, then all the better.
"We all knew that Brooks was the best player out on the Challenge Tour from the beginning of the season, and he won three times in a little over a month, which is a great achievement for him.
"If I managed to do the same then that would be perfect, but my goal is to finish the season in the top 15, even the top ten, so I will focus on earning money every week and playing more consistently.
"I've not had a very good average position this season, quite up and down, but I have just had a few weeks on holiday. I came back last week in Italy, which was tough as I had no practice, and I missed the cut by one, but I trained a lot the rest of last week, and yesterday, so I will hope for better this week."
Calmels headlines a strong home contingent that includes Victor Riu, who won for the first time as a professional just a couple of weeks ago at the Swiss Challenge to move to fourth in the Ranking. While Edouard Dubois, who is in a rich vein of form so far this season after three top five finishes, will also be looking to go well at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil, where he is attached.
As a result, Calmels is confident of a strong showing from his compatriots in France this week, and if he were to pick up a third title of 2013, then it would be an ideal place to do so, on a course that the Frenchman believes will suit his game.
"I have only played here once, last year in a pro-am, but it is a nice course and I like it. I think it suits my game, it is not too tight, but the greens are very good.
"It is always the same on the Challenge Tour, you will need to keep the ball on the fairway and putt good this week as the greens are not too easy, so putting will be the key to good scores this week.
"There is a good field here, a lot of French players, with guys who are playing well. Victor Riu won a couple of weeks ago, and Edoard Dubois plays well every week, so there could be a French victory, and maybe it could be me."
