Cabrera-Bello surges into contention

Rafael Cabrera-Bello made a stunning charge on an eventful third day at the KLM Open, clearing 14 holes in seven under par to surge to the top of the leaderboard.

The 31 year old made a fast start on Saturday, making back-to-back gains at the opening two holes before blotting his copybook with a bogey at the short third.

Cabrera-Bello recovered from that setback in style, firing three birdies in his next three holes before carding an eagle with a chip in from 50 yards at the seventh to jump to the top of the pile.

The 2012 Omega Dubai Desert Classic winner picked up another shot at the ninth to move onto 16 under par and reach the turn in 29.

The Spaniard safely parred the first four holes of his back nine to remain one shot clear of Lee Slattery and Paul Lawrie with four holes left to play.

Magnus A Carlsson carded the 40th hole-in-one of the current European Tour season at the short eighth, holing his tee shot from 222 yards, before Wade Ormsby added another ace at the 11th to propel himself into contention.

Lawrie set the clubhouse target on 15 under par on Saturday after notching seven birdies in his bogey free round of 63.

The Scot was delighted with his performance on Saturday after enduring a difficult round on day two.

He said: "I played nicely today. I hit the ball well. I really struggled yesterday and hit an awful lot of poor shots off the tee and just didn’t give myself many chances to get going. Today was a totally different story – I hit a lot of good shots.

"I took great confidence from the fact that I hit it so poorly and only shot one over. When you drive it like that and only hit three fairways, but you’ve not given it away, you have to get a boost from it.

"So I came out this morning knowing that if I could play that badly and nearly shoot level par, if I got it anywhere near the golf course I could make some birdies, and that’s exactly what happened.

"The scoring is extremely good considering how the course is off the tee. It’s quite narrow in places, but if you get it on the fairway, the greens are good and you’re going to hole some putts.

"It’s a really cool course. I’ve always liked it and liked links golf. You have to chip shots in and there’s a little bit more skill involved hitting it high and low. When we get a chance to play it, normally I do quite well.

"Tomorrow it’s up to me and the boys chasing the leaders to get off to a good start, nice and steady, make a couple of early birdies and try to chase them down."

Slattery, meanwhile, reached the turn in 32 after firing four birdies on his front nine, before carding a bogey, an eagle and a birdie in the first seven holes after the turn to sit on 15 under with two left to play.

Earlier in the day, Mikko Ilonen had claimed the clubhouse lead after carding eight birdies to head into the final round on 13 under.

The Finn said: "I made the most of the weather, because the forecast isn’t so good for the afternoon. Actually the wind died down a little bit towards the end, but now I can sit tight and see where I am at the end of the day.

"I wasn’t suffering too much yesterday. 71 wasn’t a great score but it wasn’t that far off being a 67 or something. I still saw chances out there. But if you’re able to shoot a good score on a Saturday, there’s a good chance you’ll be in the mix on Sunday."
