Cabrera-Bello looking to maintain momentum

Rafa Cabrera-Bello is hoping to use his second-place finish at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters as a springboard to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic after adding to his impressive record in the Gulf states.

The Spaniard finished in the top three for the third time in six years at Doha Golf Club and will now head to Emirates Golf Club, where he was victorious in 2012.

Cabrera-Bello finished 14th last week at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and is full of confidence after his positive start to the 2016 campaign.

"I played well last week and I was playing well coming into this week," he said. "I played very well throughout the entire week and obviously managed to score, as well.

It's just nice to be feeling that I'm playing well at the moment, feeling in control of my game, and just looking forward to any week - Rafa Cabrera-Bello

"It's great that it's Dubai, but at the moment I'm just enjoying golf."

A double bogey on the eighth left Cabrera-Bello one over par for his round as he stood on the 16th tee on Saturday, but three closing birdies vaulted him to 12 under, two shots behind winner Branden Grace.

"I started well today," he added. "I made a bad mistake on eight and then it was hard to get birdies. I had a very strong finish and I'm very pleased with the result.

"It was a tough day. It was common to make mistakes. Many of the guys out there were also making mistakes, so I just told myself that there was still a lot to play for, still a lot of golf to play, and I just stayed patient and waited for my chances and they came in the end."

Thorbjørn Olesen finished alongside Cabrera-Bello at 12 under thanks to a 15-ft birdie putt on the last and the Dane, while pleased with his performance, was left to rue missed chances.

"You would take it at the start of the week, tied second is pretty good," he said. "Obviously I had a lot of chances today but nothing really went in.

"I missed that short putt on ten which hurt a lot. I never really got the pace on the greens, I had a few good lines but then they were short. When I got it to the hole, it was not a good line. So it was just a little off there around the greens.

"I've tried to change my mental side a little bit and I've really enjoyed this week from the start. Even though I hit a few bad shots, I was still very good mentally. That's a good sign and that's what I have to keep working on."
