Dean Burmester said he is just going to take it one shot at a time as he aims to continue momentum following his second European Tour victory at last week’s Tenerife Open.
Speaking ahead of the Canary Islands Championship, also held at Costa Adeje, Burmester reflected on his 'special' win - which saw him match his career-low of 62 during the final round.
“It was pretty special (the manner of the win),” said Burmester, who went bogey-free on his way to a five stroke victory on Sunday.
“I don’t think I realised until Monday afternoon. I was like ‘Jeez you shot nine under par, bogey free’. If you want to close out a tournament, that’s how you get it done. It was pretty awesome, and when everyone congratulated me on the 18th they were like ‘You played amazing, didn’t miss a shot’. It didn’t feel that way during the round at times, but to get the score that I did was pretty cool.”
The victory was Burmester’s second on Tour and first on European Soil, coming four years after his maiden win at the 2017 Tshwane Open.
Now, with the Tour remaining at Costa Adeje for a second week in a row for the final event of the Canary Islands Swing, Burmester is hopeful that he can just do similar things to last week and produce another good result.
“Same golf course this week, which is nice,” added Burmester.
“I’m sure when I get out there, I’ll feel pretty comfortable. I’m just going to take it one shot at a time and try to do similar things that I did last week.
“My first win was in South Africa, it was great, it was nice, but to win overseas now in Europe is quite cool. Backing it up means your game can travel and I’m planning on trying to win more and more.”
And the South African has already started the week on a high, thanks to the support he’s received from friends, family, and fellow players in Tenerife.
“The first thing has been the support, how many messages of support I have had. I feel very lucky and blessed to have so many people involved in my career, it’s quite cool.
“Isn’t that what you play and practice for, to get the congratulations from your peers? It’s quite cool being back here on the putting green this morning. Everyone is like ‘Hey well played, so proud of you, so happy for you’. That makes you feel great.”
Burmester's will begin his first round at 14.06pm in Tenerife, alongside Alexander Levy and Jorge Campillo.
