The Canary Islands Swing looks set to produce two Major Championship appearances for South Africa after Dean Burmester carded a closing 65 at the 2021 Canary Islands Championship to take his score over eight rounds at Golf Costa Adeje to 44 under.
Countryman Garrick Higgo arrived on the Canaries ranked 110th on the Official World Golf Ranking but his victories this week and at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open have moved him to within touching distance of the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking and comfortably in the field for the upcoming US PGA Championship.
Burmester left the Austrian Golf Open ranked 167th and while he dropped a place after the week on Gran Canaria, his victory seven days ago at the Tenerife Open moved him to 107th, with the top 100 at the conclusion of the PGA Tour's Wells Fargo Championship all but guaranteed to book their place at Kiawah Island.
Burmester's tie for fourth in the second event at Golf Costa Adeje means he will now move to 93rd in the Official World Golf Rankings and is likely to play his first Major since the 2019 U.S. Open Championship.
The South African said he would relish the opportunity to tee it up on the Ocean Course.
"If I get there, I'm super excited," he said. "I've seen pictures and stuff of the golf course and it looks unbelievable. I'm excited to go there, I've never been to South Carolina.
"Hopefully if the form continues it'll be a fun week."
After winning at 25 under last week, Burmester ended the final event of the swing at 19 under and admitted the numbers put up were "crazy".
"I obviously like the golf course I think," he said. "There's something about it suits my eye and 44 under - if you'd given me that anytime of the year I'd take it. That's crazy scoring when you think about it."
