Dean Burmester is keen to “stay in the moment” this weekend as he chases a second European Tour title at the 2020 Italian Open.
The South African added a 68 to his opening 64 to reach 12 under par at the halfway stage at Chervó Golf Club.
That gave the 31-year-old the early clubhouse lead, and afterwards Burmester revealed that he is trying to take a more carefree approach.
“I keep telling myself to let loose, don't have any control, stay in the moment,” he said.
“Whatever happens, happens. If you hit a putt and it goes in, it goes in; if you hit a bad shot so be it, that's just the way it goes. I think it's paying dividends because I'm playing quite nicely so if I can keep it up I should be alright.”
Burmester made four birdies as he raced to the turn in 32, but further gains at the 11th and 15th were swiftly cancelled out by bogeys on the 12th and 17th.
“It was obviously a little misty and a little cooler, not much wind though so still there for the taking,” he added.
“I think there will be some guys who do some good scoring this afternoon. Greens are great and it's pretty soft.
“I'm a little disappointed to make two bogeys today but other than that I'm happy with the way it's going
“If you're a long hitter this week and you're hitting fairways its a prime place to be. Get on the range now because I missed a few on that back nine and try and sort it out.”
