Double Senior Major champion Paul Broadhurst will bid to become just the second person in history to win both the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship at London Golf Club from August 2-5.
The 1991 Ryder Cup player, who won his first Senior Major at Carnoustie when he triumphed at The Senior Open Presented by Rolex, secured his second in May as he stormed to a four stroke victory at Harbor Shores Golf Club.
His victory was his seventh since joining the senior ranks in 2015. He has won the Scottish Senior Open twice and the 2017 Paris Legends Championship in addition to the Senior Open. Broadhurst has also enjoyed success on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, winning the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach and Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf.
Now the Midlands native has his sights set on emulating Australia’s Peter Thomson who won the US Senior PGA Championship in 1984 and then the PGA Seniors Championship four years later in 1988 at North Berwick.
“I’ve only won twice in England, at Hoylake and St Mellion,” said Broadhurst. “I usually don’t worry about where I win, I just like winning, but it would be nice to win in England for once. It has been quite a few years since I’ve done that.
“The two weeks in July and August, first at The Senior Open, then the PGA Seniors, fit in to my schedule and I’m really happy to have the chance to play back-to-back events in the UK.
“I really want to support the Staysure Tour, it’s quite an exciting time for the organisation with new events cropping up – and great to see this event back on the schedule.”
60 members from the Staysure Tour will be joined by 15 PGA professionals, with the balance of the field made up from a Monday qualifying event for the chance to play on the acclaimed International Course at London Golf Club.
Broadhurst played in the 2008 and 2009 European Opens on the neighbouring Heritage Course, but admits that he feels more comfortable on the host layout of this year’s Championship.
“I didn’t play particularly well on the Heritage Course on the Main Tour,” he said. “The International fits my eye better. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
Entry to the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship is free, with a £10 charge per car for parking.
