Brilliant Poulter leads the way in Ohio

Ian Poulter produced his lowest round in eight years to open up a one-shot lead on the opening day of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

The Englishman carded eight birdies and no bogeys on Thursday afternoon as the world's best players made the most of favourable scoring conditions at Firestone Country Club.

His 62 was Poulter's best score since the 2010 UBS Hong Kong Open, when he posted a second-round 60 on his way to lifting the trophy.

American duo Kyle Stanley and Rickie Fowler were in a tie for second on seven under par after shooting opening 63s.

Spain's Jon Rahm, American Patrick Cantlay and South Korea's Si Woo Kim were then another stroke back on six under.

Starting at the tenth tee, Poulter opened his round with back-to-back birdies before rolling in from 20 feet for another at the 14th.

The 42 year old then reeled off four birdies in five holes from the 16th to join early clubhouse leader Stanley on seven under par.

And the Ryder Cup star knocked in his ten-foot birdie putt at the sixth to grab the outright lead before producing a brilliant par save at the ninth - his last - to remain in front after getting into bunker trouble.

Poulter, who has never finished in the top ten at this event, was thrilled with his opening round despite missing out on tying the course record by a single shot.

He said: "If you would have offered me this at the start of the day, I would have snapped your arm for it, for sure.

"Yeah, we can be greedy and say I'd love to have holed that putt on the eighth to have tied the record, but eight under par's a pretty decent round for me around this golf course.

"All in all, it's a very decent start to the week. I looked at my stats (at Firestone) this morning, which were terrible.

"My overall stats on this golf course have not been good. Tied-13th is as good as it's been, which is surprising.

"With that in mind, I needed to kind of get off to a decent start, try and see if we can finish ahead of tied-13th this time."

Stanley made a lightning-quick start on Thursday morning, firing six birdies in his first nine holes to reach the turn in 29. He then carded two further birdies and a single bogey on his back nine to get to seven under.

Fowler, meanwhile, made four birdies on the front nine - including three in a row from the sixth - before picking up shots at the tenth, 15th and last to get within a shot of Poulter's lead.

"It's fun being able to take advantage when the golf course is playing on the easier side," said Fowler.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, Australian duo Jason Day and Marc Leishman, Indian Anirban Lahiri and America's Luke List, Kevin Na and Justin Thomas were all on five under as 13 players shot 65 or better in a single round at a World Golf Championships event for the first time.

Course-specialist Tiger Woods - an eight-time winner at Firestone - opened with a 66 to sit a shot further back.
