Brandon Robinson Thompson takes up coach's challenge with strong first round

Brandon Robinson Thompson jokingly set his sights on completing one of his season’s goals in successive weeks after putting himself firmly in contention at the 2024 D+D REAL Czech Masters.

The Englishman was in a six-way tie one shot behind first-round leader Pieter Moolman after a seven-under-par 65 which was bogey-free until the last hole.

Having won last week’s Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by the R&A on the Challenge Tour – finishing eight shots clear of the field in Aberdeen – Robinson Thompson revealed he had been set a target of two wins this season.

He said: “That conversation with the coach, he actually never specified it had to be on the Challenge Tour, so he said you just got to win twice this year. I'm very grateful we left the door open.

“Look, I love playing golf. I love competing, it's no secret and I'll just enjoy myself the rest of the week.”

Robinson Thompson credited his team, including aimpoint putting coach Jamie Donaldson – not to be confused with the Welsh professional who won the inaugural staging of this tournament in 2014.

“I'm doing a lot of really good things,” Robinson Thompson said. “I switched coaches. I found myself back on the greens again.

“My aimpoint guy, Jamie Donaldson, really helped me out. Reinvigorated my whole process. Not just forcing it on the greens, so I feel like I'm in a really good place and good things are happening.”

Robinson Thompson went out in 31 with three birdies and an eagle, after a superb approach to the par-five ninth. He made three more birdies coming home and would have shared the overnight lead had it not been for a messy bogey at the last.

He said: "I hit it right down the middle, fatted it into the bunker and then if it didn't hit the grandstand, I think it would have gone 100 yards over the green.

“Dropped it out the VIP tent and then holed an 18-footer. Kind of pleased with that finish but also a bit annoying, but it is what it is."
