While World Number Three Martin Kaymer began with back-to-back bogeys and remained two over par after eight holes, World Number 161 Boyd reached the turn in a five under 31 and then added another birdie at the 432 yard first.

On six under the 24 year old was two in front of Dutchman Tim Sluiter.

Kaymer was playing with American star Dustin Johnson and defending champion David Horsey. They were both one under, Horsey hitting back from an opening double bogey six at the 471 yard first.

Paul Casey, who missed the cut at last week's US Open Championship, and Retief Goosen were also one under, while the later starters included Sergio Garcia, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Francesco Molinari and Henrik Stenson.

European Tour rookie Sluiter, ranked 1,368th in the world and without a top-30 finish on the circuit, improved to five under on the 13th, but Boyd re-establish his two stroke advantage with a seventh birdie of the day at the 331 yard fifth.

Johnson, on the other hand, bogeyed the 18th and first to drop to one over and Kaymer, having finished the back nine with a birdie, made four on the short second to be two over again.
