Favourite – Rory McIlroy

The four-time Major winner returns to Wentworth for the first time since 2019 with the Northern Irishman targeting his second career victory at Wentworth. In 2014, McIlroy overturned a seven-shot deficit to claim the title and his enviable record at the venue also includes a runner-up finish in 2018 and a top-five finish in 2009. He ended his PGA TOUR campaign in style last month by rallying from six shots behind World Number One Scottie Scheffler to win the TOUR Championship and capture the FedExCup for a record third time. The 33-year-old has also finished runner-up at the Masters Tournament in April and third at The Open Championship in July, while he finished third in Dubai at the second Rolex Series event of the season.

Form horse – Ewen Ferguson

Such is the season Ferguson is enjoying, being denied a third Tour victory at the Made in HimmerLand by a brilliant finish from Oliver Wilson couldn’t dampen his spirits. The Scotsman’s victory in Qatar in March and a wire-to-wire success in Northern Ireland last month, along with top tens in Kenya and then again last week have helped the 26-year-old rise to 11th in the DP World Tour Rankings ahead of his debut at the BMW PGA Championship. With qualification for Team Europe at the 2023 Ryder Cup beginning this week, he will be eager to maintain his fine form at the West Course.

Wild card – Dean Burmester

The South African was among 25 golfers to earn a PGA TOUR card for the 2022/23 season at the Korn Ferry Tour finals. As a result of his performance, he has risen to 66th in the world, just two spots below his career-high ranking. Burmester, a two-time winner on the DP World Tour, finished runner-up on home soil at the Steyn City Championship in March and his Rolex Series record this season includes a share of tenth at the Genesis Scottish Open. The 33-year-old followed that up by finishing tied 11th in The 150th Open at St Andrews. In his five appearances at Wentworth, he has registered a share of ninth and 11th, while he carded four rounds of 70 to finish tied 30th last year.
