BMW PGA Championship - Day two digest

Everything you need to know from day two at the fourth Rolex Series event of the season.

Big finishes sent Swedes soaring, Donald's dozen made the weekend, Jon Rahm was feeling philosophical and Min Woo Lee invented a word on day two of the BMW PGA Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Wentworth Club.

Åberg and Söderberg taste Swede success

Ludvig Åberg and Sebastian Söderberg shared a one-shot lead after day two as the Swedish duo produced a pair of big finishes in the twilight. Söderberg recovered from an opening bogey to turn in 33 and then made a hat-trick of gains from the tenth but he was still two shots off the lead before he birdied the 17th and eagled the last to card a 64 and get to ten under. At that point, Åberg was back on the final tee at nine under having birdied the 16th and 17th to add to five further gains and a double-bogey. And with the glow of the scoreboard illuminating the 18th green in the fading light, he holed from four feet to sign for a 66 and join his countryman at the summit. Thomas Detry, Masahiro Kawamura, Adrian Meronk and Tommy Fleetwood were a shot off the lead, with 24 players having to complete their rounds on Saturday.

Åberg continues to impress

Turned professional in June, won on the DP World Tour in September and was selected for the Ryder Cup team the next day. Åberg has been making headlines all summer and with golf like this, it's easy to see why.

His playing partners were fairly handy as well.

Donald's dozen march on

All 12 members of the European Ryder Cup team teed it up this week and all 12 will play the weekend after making the cut. Åberg, Fleetwood, Sepp Straka and Tyrrell Hatton all sit inside the top ten, with Matt Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland all within five of the lead. Shane Lowry is at four under, one clear of Robert MacIntyre, while Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose both birdied the last to make it on the number. Nicolai Højgaard may be the one most proud of his performance, recovering from an opening 76 with a 67 to force his way into the weekend.

Detry in 'great shape'

Detry believes his game is in "great shape" as he goes in search of an elusive first DP World Tour victory. The Belgian has five runner-up finishes and 25 other top tens in 150 starts, having easily retained his playing privileges every season since graduating from the European Challenge Tour in 2016, with a best Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex finish of 18th in 2020. He has a taste for the big stage, with six of his 30 top tens coming in Rolex Series events, including a tie for fifth at Wentworth Club last season, and he said: "I'm very pleased, to be honest. I felt very calm out there on the course. My game is in great shape so hopefully I can keep that same rhythm and that same feeling for the next two days. It was really good. I made some great putts, obviously got off to a bogey start but then after that I didn't really make any mistakes. Looking forward to the weekend."

Philosophical Rahm fights back

Jon Rahm was in philosophical mood after showing all his battling qualities to claw his way right into contention heading into the weekend. He was not at his brilliant best in an opening 71 and when he recorded a double-bogey on the first in round two after plugging in the face of a bunker and then dropped another shot on the third, he looked like he might struggle to make the weekend. He does not have two Major Championships for nothing, however, and after an eagle on the fourth, he birdied the ninth to recover his early losses and made five birdies on the back nine to sign for a 67 and get to six under. "There's just some things that happen in golf and I found myself three over on the fourth tee, but I told (caddie) Adam, if we could bring it back to even par by the time we get to the tenth, you can still post two, three, four under, it's very possible," he said. "And I was able to just do that and gain a little bit of confidence after that putt on nine and played a fantastic back nine."

The chase continues

We had two near aces on the 14th on day one and they were at it again on day two.

We weren't far from one on the tenth, either.
