Double disaster but Relecom shines

You may think everything has to go smoothly for a player to shoot six under on the first day of a tournament, but Pierre Relecom suffered two major upsets before his sparkling 66 at the Telenet Trophy. First, he awoke at the crack of dawn to a phonecall from his caddie to say he would not be able to carry his bag during the tournament because he was in hospital. Uri Goldstein had been cycling home from work when he was knocked off by a car, and thankfully only ended up with a broken foot. Then, minutes before his round, he discovered a two iron he’d borrowed from another player was illegal because it had the old-style grooves, so he had to quickly ditch it from his bag before teeing off. Let’s hope the saying ‘bad things always comes in threes’ is just a myth!

 Happy birthday... or not

It was not such a happy birthday for Julien Clement on Friday. The Frenchman should have been playing the second round at Rinkven Golf Club but instead was coming to terms with being disqualified for signing for the wrong score yesterday. Clement did not stick around in Belgium, which meant he was not around to receive the bouquet of flowers delivered to the golf club wishing him many happy returns.
