The Dane was four under through 11 holes to take a share of the lead with Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and American Dustin Johnson.

Bjørn, who finished in a tie for second at this tournament in 2005, put his tee shot on the par three third to within nine feet and holed for birdie, and followed that up with another birdie on the par five fifth.

He picked up another shot on the eighth to turn in 33 and when he got up and down on the par five 11th, he found himself at the top of the leaderboard.

Matsuyama was also four under through 11 as he picked up four birdies after starting on the tenth and Johnson, who also started on the back nine, registered two birdies and an eagle on the par five 16th.

Tyrrell Hatton opened with a pair of birdies on the tenth and 11th and hit another on 13 to sit one shot off the lead through five alongside Rickie Fowler, who had completed seven holes, and Harris English.

James Morrison, Mikko Ilonen, Anirban Lahiri and Marc Warren were then in the group at two under as the later morning starters moved towards the turn.

Defending champion and World Number One Rory McIlroy was due to tee off in the afternoon alongside Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson.
