Birdies send Elvira flying in South Africa

Nacho Elvira was sad to have to come off the golf course after a stunning seven-birdie blitz sent him into a share of the lead after day one of the 2022 MyGolfLife Open hosted by Pecanwood.

Hennie Du Plessis had set the target at ten under at Pecanwood Golf and Country Club and Elvira did not look likely to catch him when he turned in 33 on a low-scoring day.

But the Spaniard took advantage of the par-five tenth to kick-start a stunning run, with six more birdies from the 11th to the 16th sending him to ten under.

"I loved it," he said. "When I turned my back to 16 I was like, 'I can't believe this is finishing today'.

"I was having a lot of fun and on days like this you don't want it to finish. I'm very happy and very pleased with the way I played.

"I wasn't thinking about anything, I was just picking targets and I guess today my swing was feeling great and the ball was starting on line.

"We have a lot of birdie opportunities, a lot of wedges coming in and reachable par fives and I guess I took advantage of those today.

"We all know that this course is going to play easy because there is a lot of birdie chances and it's not playing long and it's not very demanding off the tee.

"You have to make yourself think that you're going to have to make a lot of birdies and that's what we tried to do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but I guess it worked today."
